Week 2 - Quick Overview of Computer Games Industry

The Computer Games Industry is an extremely hard and challenging place to get into. The jobs you can apply for all if not most require quality work and skills to even get a job working there including communication, team work and being committed to what you are working on. There are many roles within the Computer Games Industry which I will talk about later on through the blog in more detail. Also when applying for this sort of job you need to make sure you are going for the job role you want to be working with, for example animator etc. When you first go out into the industry you always have to start of working for a company that may not make the best games just for experience in the games industry and to also get better at skills you may or may not know.

There are many games companies out there in the world, some may not do so well and some do extremely well. Most companies compete to try and produce the best product that generally sells the most, for example Activision, Infinity Ward and Treyarch are all very well known companies mainly known for there best selling franchise Call of Duty. They sell millions if not billions of copies of this game every year they release a new Call of Duty, this is what helps the company able to make more games and stop them from getting bankrupt.

The UK games industry is doing really well when it comes to computer games because it has the largest games market in the world and is the third largest games industry. Some of the major top franchises are developed in the UK industry, this includes Grand Theft Auto, Tomb Raider, Burnout, Little Big Planet, Wipeout and Dirt. Although most of these are not particularly a top franchise to me because they may not be my sort of game, some people may love these games which is why they are top franchises and that is also what the games industry is about. Developing new games to see what people think about them and developing further from that game creating more games similar to that because the company knows it sells well in the market.

The UK is known for making one of the best selling games series in the world, Grand Theft Auto. Developed by a company called Rockstar Games who also developed other games such as Midnight Club, Max Payne, Manhunt and many other games that may or may not have done so well. I just mentioned some games that I have played and heard of. Nearly every Computer Games Company in the world have at least developed a game that hasn't sold much in the market and caused some companies to get bankrupt because they have spent loads of money on a game that they never got there money back on. The recent Grand Theft Auto game that was released became the best selling game within 24 hours so far making 496 million pound in sales all over the world. 3 days after it was released it made an extraordinary 700 million pound.

The US games industry is one of the fastest growing gaming industries in the country. American's spend more time playing games than people in the UK. If it wasn't for online game modes on games nowadays I don't think games would be doing as well or selling as much as they are. America have a lot of well known game companies that produce some amazing games that also sell really well. Treyarch is one of the companies in America who have worked on some of the Call of Duty games for example black ops 2 which in my experience was one of the best games they ever made. The game made 1 billion dollars worth of sales in 15 days from when it was launched and beat the record of sales from there previous Call of Duty game "Modern Warfare 3". I think most people will agree that Call of Duty is one of there best games they ever made. You got other companies like Valve, who produced a number of top selling games like Half Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal and Counter Strike etc. Although they may all be really good games, my personal favorite has got to be Left 4 Dead because I am a big fan of zombies but I know there are plenty of people who love the other list of games.

The video games industry in Canada is good for the number of employments they have given to people who want to work on computer games, they have the third largest computer games industry due to this happening. Canada have attracted world leading game developers over the years and publishers studios like Ubisoft, EA, Bioware and Warner Bros which is some of the many companies in Canada that make games. Canada have some top games in the charts that have all been a massive success over the years and all over the world, for example the Assassins Creed series and Tom Clancy's games all sold well in the market and achieved worldwide success. Still these games sell loads all over the world when a new game is released.

Now we all know that Japan are going well in the computer games industry. They sell some of the top franchises ever in the world and largest titles ever made. Some of which are old games but still sell well. Some of the games I have played which I know sold well is Final Fantasy, Mario, Pokemon and Metal Gear solid etc. All of these games are top franchises in Japan and some of the companies that have produced these games still bring out another game every few years to add to the franchise.

Japan have a lot of well known games companies which people tend to know a lot about because of there successful games and how well they have attracted the games market. They have companies such as Square Enix, Sega, Namco, Taito Nintendo. All doing very well in the computer games industry especially Square Enix with there Final Fantasy franchise from over the years and Sega with Sonic etc. These companies still do really well when it comes to selling there new game releases because they know what people expect with there games from previous games.
