I am going to look at a number of different show reels from other artist and mainly focus on 3D environment artist show reels because then its based on my chosen job role. I will say what I think is bad about each and what I think is really good about it, if any improvements needed I will write down what they are.
Lectures Show reel
Although it may not be needed, I think it would be useful to put up what the lecture showed us in a lesson on what he done for his show reel. This was a show reel made for us to get an idea on what we should be doing for ours so it really helps watching it and catching all the main points he has in each scene which demonstrate his work really well, which is something I could do the same to show important parts of a scene.
Throughout Jon Pledgers (lectures name) show reel he is very clear on explaining whats happening in each scene and demonstrates using a few images on what he wants to show and give you an idea of what hes going for in that scene. He explains well what is being shown in each part of the show reel and why he zooms in on some parts of the asset to show off the detail used to make it.
Other Artist show reels
I found a 3D Environment Artist show reel created by someone called Sam Hayes who from the show reel has mainly worked on environment work.

As I watched this show reel, the first thing I noticed is that this artist never used any text in his show reel to say what each scene is but I am not sure if this is because its finished work. Although he doesn't use any text to say whats being shown he demonstrates his work really well having the camera pan through the environment showing off all the big areas of detail. After so long he shows parts of his environments in wire frame mode which is very useful to have showing because it shows how this artist builds his models/assets. I like the way the layout is for each scene from the environment, he shows of different scenes within the environment to show of animations he has working. He also zooms in at some points when panning through the environment to show of the level of detail he has put into both his models and textures using different lighting to get some really nice effects. The timing for this show reel is a good time to have for a show reel as its not too long and gets straight to the point of the work he has done which is what others look for when watching show reels. Generally people don't like to watch over 2 minutes of show reel because it gets boring for the person watching it.
The next show reel I found is from a 3D Environment Artist named Grant Thompson. I think this artist also went to the same University as me and studied the same course to get where he is now.

This artist has a really good show reel and shows of his best work really well. I'm not sure if the detail in the title for the show reel is needed but I think that his title screen works really well when it carries on to the environment work. This artist also doesn't use any text to say whats happening in each scene so I can only assume that with finished work it is not needed. He still has a title to say what each scene/environment is showing which is very useful for other artist or companies when they watch the show reel. It tells them what it is they are looking at and when he his showing different assets. I really like how he shows not just big environments but small scenes of environment which helps show of the detail he has put into his work as it means he can zoom in more on these scenes. Also I watched it through again and on the smaller scenes which he demonstrates I see that he also gives you the map size he uses and the amount of tries it is for that one scene. Its very useful to know this especially from a companies point of view.
The final show reel I looked at is someone named Zeynab Abdirahman who is also a 3D Environments artist who has worked on a number of different environments.

I watched this show reel and the first thing I noticed was before he shows of his environment work he gives each one a title so we know what we are looking at in each scene he shows. This is very useful rather than it skipping to another environment without saying its changed. I think it looks more professional having it split up into different sections the person watching knows. Throughout the show reel video it doesn't have any animations to show which isn't needed but I think it would be better to show some assets animation instead of still images. This doesn't matter much because as long as the work being demonstrated is good then no one takes notice of animations, also because he has stated that he is a 3D environment artist, he doesn't have to include animations.
He seems to show of his best environment scenes and zooms in on certain points within that scene to show of the level of detail on his models/assets within it and it helps to give the person watching an idea on how he models and how well he can texture. Compared to the other 2 show reels I looked at, his show reel is nearly 3 minutes long which I think is too much for show reel but I think as long as the work within the show reel is really good then people will carry on watching to see what else he has made.
