Practice Interview
The lesson we had on interviews was extremely useful to me as I have never had the experience of being in an interview so I never actually knew what it was like. For this interview we worked in groups of 3-4 and took in turns for each role of the interview, these being the interviewer, the person being interviewed and the note taker which writes down how well the interview went and any good and bad points about it. Even though I worked with people I know it was still very nervous for me because it was first time and also others were nervous too because everyone is nervous when it comes to having an interview for a job. I am not sure if I did well or not but throughout the the point where I was being interviewed I tried to answer all questions when I had an answer for the question being asked. I know I may have had more bad notes than good but it helps me to improve on what I need to improve when it comes to future interviews at actual real interviews for a job. The interview may not of been on a game I like but it still gives me some ideas on what I may be asked if I get chance for an interview in a games company.
When it came to me interviewing the next person I made sure to ask every question on the sheet and keep a note on what each answer was given to me. Compared to me this person was very confident when answering questions and gave me answers as soon as I asked. I realized that this is because they have had experience before in interviews for an actual job and know what they need to do in order to get the job.
Things to keep in mind
Be prepared and confident - Make sure that you go prepared and you that you have questions that you want to ask and some ideas of what you may be asked so that you can give an answer straight away. It would also be a good idea to read about the company so you know what to expect and see what it is you will be doing in that job and the people you may be working with just so you have an idea of the company before the interview. Make sure you know your strengths and weaknesses and what you hope you can bring to the company before the interview so you can answer it when they ask you those questions.
Ask good questions - If you ask good questions to do with the job you are applying for and show you have a deep understanding in the job you are applying for then the person interviewing will see that you are very interested in the job and may consider you depending on how well the interview goes and if you meet the requirements. Quality of both answers and questions is a good thing but sometimes can show your weaknesses which is something you need to be careful with. The best sort of questions to ask should be mostly related to the job role you are applying for.
How the interviewer is interviewing - If it seems like the person interviewing is ticking boxes then the best thing to do is to ask them about expectations for the job and give them an example of what you have done for the job you are being interviewed for so you are able to get all the boxes ticked. Also so you can validate that you have done similar work to what they expect for the job.
Strengths and weaknesses - For every strength you have write down 1-2 achievements you have to prove the strengths you are saying to the interviewer. For the weaknesses explain how you managed to deal with it and changed it into a learning experience.
Things not to do
Being nervous - When it comes to having an interview it is really hard not to be nervous especially when you going for a job you really want. Its not bad being nervous because everyone is nervous at interviews and the person interviewing will expect that anyway. If you are too nervous then this is a bad thing because it can cause you to answer questions wrong and the interviewer may get distracted to what they are asking you. This could lead to you not getting the job.
Don't say you have no weaknesses - If you go to an interview and they ask you your strengths and weaknesses and you say this, then you will look big headed and generally people don't like people like that. Also you may look bit ignorant saying that because everyone has a weakness which means you are not honest. If you say you have a weakness and that you have learned from this weakness then it will show you are willing to get better.
Don't give answers too short or too long - If you answer questions and they are too long then the interviewer will be getting bored because you are talking too much about one thing when they want to get straight to the point. If they are too short then they will not get much from it and therefore will not be able to see if you have what it takes for the job. Make sure your questions are simple and straight forward and get straight to the point, then you will be fine.
Being too dominant - Basically when you go to a interview, the person interviewing is generally the leader of the meeting and on odd occasions you get to be. If you are acting leader the whole interview then you will not stand a chance at the job. If you are like this they will start to wonder what you will be like working with others in the company and will not hire you.
Not concentrating on the interviewer - This is major for the interview. Do not watch the clock the whole time you are being interviewed because the interviewer will find it rude and think you are not interested in the job. Always keep eye contact so they can see you are really interested in what they are saying about the job and so they can see that you are listening to them. Not responding to questions is a bad thing to do during the interview because it shows you are not focused and wasn't prepared for the interview which looks bad on you as a person.
