Week 8 - Researching Portfolios

I am going to be looking at portfolios based on my chosen job role and seeing how others have demonstrated there work through the layout of there page. It will give me an understanding of what it is I need to do in order to make my work stand out and how I should demonstrate it when it comes to making my portfolio next semester.

I will look mainly at a few environment artist portfolios to see what work they have done and say what I think about each one from my point of view. I will focus on the more eye catching portfolios which I have looked at and explain in my opinion what the pros and cons are if there are any.

 William J Kowach - 3D Artist

While I was looking over the internet for portfolios, this person caught my eye as I was searching for environment artist portfolios I noticed this one. After looking through the portfolio I noticed that the work he has produced is really good but the way he has laid out his work in my eyes is not very appealing to me because the writing is too small and needs to stand out more to what it is he is showing. Also I like the way he has laid out each different type of art role and shows a image of each asset/scene that he has built in each column.

Once I open up one of the environments that this person has done it shows 2 images of the environment in 2 different perspectives but it doesn't really tell you much about it, like the way he built it or anything. He hasn't really explained how he has built things throughout his portfolio which could be a downfall when it comes to others looking at his work. The good thing about his work is that he shows some good concept and screenshots of in game and helps us see what the textures are like.

Lewis Labram - 3D Environment and Prop Artist

Another portfolio I came across when searching the internet is someone who is also a Environment artist and has worked on a number of assets not just environment stuff but props as well.

After I looked at this portfolio I noticed that there wasn't much writing to explain stuff on his portfolio mostly images of his work. His work is good and he demonstrates his work really well because he shows it with textures and without textures in wire frame mode, this is extremely useful to artist and companies because it allows the person looking at it to see how this person models his assets and the techniques he uses. The only thing I can see bad about it is he doesn't really layout his portfolio very well with sections containing separate art roles which can confuse some people. it is good that he demonstrates his 2D skills as well as his 3D skills.

David Buan - 3D Environment Artist

After looking at this final portfolio I noticed that it seems a lot better compared to the other 2 portfolios I looked at. The writing is big and you can read it clearly which is what people see when they go on portfolios. He has laid out his portfolio really well and separated his professional work and his personal work in different sections which is really good for when companies look at it because they will see he works on his own work too not just work he has assigned to him.

After clicking on one of his environment work you can see that he explains really well what the scene is from and what it is about which is what people and companies want to know when they look at portfolios. They look at how well the portfolios are laid out and how professional they look. He demonstrates his work the same on each piece of work he has produced.
