Week 12 - Finalizing the showreel

For this final week of working on getting the block out show reel I will be story boarding what it is exactly I want to show and how it will be shown through the show reel. This will be the plan of how I want it to look for when I am creating my show reel and I can use it as reference to follow each step. I'm not planning of having a full environment of block out models to show in the show reel but models just to show the idea of what I am going for and the way the camera will be moving around in each scene. Any models/assets in the show reel are all for block out just to give the block out show reel something different than just images.

Storyboard

  • I thought it would be a good idea to create a title screen which I could use in my block out show reel. It doesn't have to be a finished title but it is still better to show one rather than have it go straight to showing environments/assets. Its also good to show the viewer what software you have experience using so they know before watching your show reel. The title screen will last for 5 - 8 seconds then move onto the next scene.

  •  The next step is to say what the environment being shown is going to be based from just so that people have an idea of what they are looking at. This is just a rough thing that I want to do to section each piece of work. This is also part of the style I am planning to go for. This will be about 5 seconds.

  • For the 3rd part of the block out show reel I will have the camera starting of panning around the environment. First it will look left and then right for about 5 seconds each way, then go straight ahead and pan around the rest of the environment showing all areas close up. It will pan around the environment for about 45 seconds depending how big it is.

  •  For the next step the camera will pan into one of the watch towers and rotate around it slowly showing close up detail on the asset and textures used to show of the model. This will be about 20 seconds in total.

  •  finally for this environment the camera will finish panning around the environment and then slowly zoom out the show the whole environment as a whole. This will be for about 25 seconds.
  •

  • The next step for the show reel is to do another title screen to say what the next work is and to show that its moving on to the next piece of work. This will be about 5 seconds.

  •  The first part of this environment starts of by front door of the house. Camera pans slowly left and then right both 5 seconds each and then pans forward into the dining room.

  • When it gets into the dining room the camera will pan left and right for 5 about 5 seconds each to show around the area and then pan around the room for 10 seconds more. The man will not be in the scene.

  • Finally for the last part of this work the camera will pan back out into the hallway ending at the front door. This will take about 8 seconds.

Here is my finished block out show reel. All material in this video is just to show how I want the camera to pan around the level and give an idea on what I am building.

Final Exit Plan

Short term

While I am currently still studying at University as a student I plan to improve and gain more knowledge working with 3D work including environments and other assets within this work. I will be working on 2 modules next semester in which I have to build something for each and this will help me to improve and get better at things that I may not be so good at. I have currently worked on a number of environments alone and in groups, but working on the 2 environments next semester for the last few months will help me become better in that section of 3D modelling and it will allow me to test and try out new things that I may not have used in previous work to help get my work to a good enough standard to work in the industry.

Working on both projects during the semester should hopefully increase my knowledge and skills I have already within that job role. For the time where we have no work over Christmas I plan on focusing getting the written work complete for Independent Studies so that I can come back next semester to hopefully be able to focus more on the modelling side of it in order to get it complete and look good enough to put into a portfolio.

Long term

I'm not too sure what I want to do after Uni but I may focus on improving both my modelling skills and texturing because I feel that I can improve and that I could perhaps produce better work if I try out different techniques. This will mean taking some time out before going for a job and working to get so much better for when I do decided to apply for one. I feel that my work compared to work in the industry is no way near as good and I find that I am not as confident as I should be with my work which is why I think it would be a good reason to focus on my weaknesses within 3D art. Doing this could mean I could work on stuff I have already done to make it better and try out new techniques for example, on any environment work I have at the end of the course I could work on on the time I take out to help me improve my 3D skills and texturing skills.
