Week 6 - Chosen job role and why

Chosen Job Role - Environment Artist

When I first come onto this course I wasn't too sure what i wanted to do after when it comes to working in the games industry. When it got the the beginning of 3rd year I wanted to work on objects/props for my portfolio but I have now decided that I would like to work on environment work for it as I feel I have a good understanding of knowledge working with environments both 2nd year and now the 3rd year of the course.

I worked on an environment in the first semester of second year based of a horror film called creep, which I feel went quite well considering I never done much 3D work in Maya before University and only used Blender in college. The level I produced wasn't exactly the same as the film but it got the idea of what it was I was going for and turned out well at the end. Images below show some screenshots of the level.

The second semester of 2nd year I worked in a group with 4 other people on the course working on creating an environment of a race track level for a racing game and I created some of the buildings for this level which is also part of the environment.

Finally in 3rd year I have been working in another group on a game with programmers and there is about 10 of us altogether. We have been working on making a superhero vs villain death match multiplayer game and I have been working on assets to put into the environment and been watching how the environment has been changing over the weeks.

I feel like I have more knowledge in this field than any other field in the games industry mostly because I have spent more time working in this area and I feel like it is a good choice to go for.

I never really liked the environment artist side of the job but now that I have had chance to work on environments not only on my own but in a team, I think its quite open in what you can build and freedom, especially if you are doing it for personal reasons. It also gives you chance to work with new techniques and thing that can help make the environment look better which may be something I need to work on or improve on. You can get the whole visual style of the game just from the environment and you can understand what it is that you are going for with your environment just from the textures being used and the style and layout of scenery in the environment which is what I find so appealing about this job role.
